Why do so many people follow a new question?
Very often I find questions that are less than an hour old, yet have over 100 followers. Why do so many people follow it yet no one comments or answers?
EDIT: Not 5 seconds after I post this question and there's already 77 people following this question.

in your question you added 3 tags follow ,answers, answers.unity3d.com
these people were following these tags,so when you created this post, they automatically followed your question :)

In profile settings there is a checkbox set to true by default that says something like "automatically follow new questions regarding your interests" or something like that. There's also a checkbox "automatically follow all new questions" but that's off by default. That's really unpractical if you ask me, i turned it off since my email was getting flooded by the messages from this forum. :)

Moderators will usually follow questions at first "Automatically" then become less interested after and stop following a question.
Actually moderators are exactly the same as other users except they have earned the REP to gain moderator tools and priviledges. Question Followers are added automatically based on their preferences and users are also added to the list if they comment or answer on the thread. $$anonymous$$oderators will usually follow a User rather than a question, in order to keep an eye on them.
