What is this Mode Selection in Editor and how does it work?

I've seen many scripts which have a mode selection variable in editor, a Drop Down Menu where you can select different modes and the script behaves differently based on which mode you have selected (see this picture for example).

It seems like a very useful feature but I literally cannot find anything about it in the Internet. Could anyone please explain me how this works, is there a dedicated doc or a video tutorial?
