Unity 2D book for kids?

So my kid (11) wants to write a platformer with Unity. I myself am a programmer but I have zero knowledge in modern game development. He understands programming concept, he's done some projects in python and a bit of Android java development. He has no javascript or C# experience but I think that this won't be a problem. He prefers learning from books over tutorials. And he is highly intelligent.

Can anyone recommend a good book for learning Unity 2D (that's what you use for platformers?) that's suitable for young people? Doesn't necessarily have to be kid-oriented, but if there's a good laugh here or there it will greatly help ;-)

I feel like most "Intro to using Unity" stuff treats the program$$anonymous$$g part as radioactive, and babies you on pre-written scripts or what variables are. For someone interested in program$$anonymous$$g, I'd almost get a small working project using C#, any book on C#, and encourage the kid to play with the code.

Of course, I can't recommend a good C# program$$anonymous$$g book, either. Pages 15-37 tend to be lists of every single variable type. Followed by a page and a half on ifs (the half page is for ifs not using else.)

I learned vbs,vb.net,python,javascript and c# by just watch tutorials on youtube. You can find many beginner tutorials of unity over there. But if you prefer to learn via books I think http://www.amazon.com/Game-Development-Unity-Michelle-Menard/dp/1435456580 is a good book. You can buy it for $2.14(used book) or $22.54. Also take a look at it-books, they have many free ebooks/pdf`s! http://www.it-ebooks.org/tag/unity you have many books about unity here, one for a absolute beginner like your kid is http://www.it-ebooks.org/book/apress/unity_for_absolute_beginners I hope I helped you.

That book was published in 2011! The OP asks for Unity 2D, only introduced in 2014...

I can see that there's a new version of $$anonymous$$enard's book that was released about a year ago. Is anyone here familiar with it?
