How do you change an asset's import settings at creation?

I'm creating a texture through code, and saving it. I want to then set the import settings for that texture. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if there's a way to access the texture's importer from that script, instead of having to write a pre/post processor for it. Though if that's the only solution, how would I go about writing one for this specific case?
