Lying

postitas: trissward - 29.04.2020, , loetud: 598x

Everyone lies. Adults usually tell lies to gain personal or professional advantages in specific situations. Though, children start telling the untruth to escape punishment, receive extra chocolate, or a big prize. They can also practice deceit to praise or to avoid the uninteresting duties. These motives are clear and they do not surprise the parents. However, it might be hard to understand when a child invents. Some time ago I had an opportunity to watch the presentation by Dr. Kang Lee about children lying, its reasons, and methods of detecting it and now I’d like to describe this in my post.
Every child will eventually learn to tell lies. Before watching this presentation, one might think that the latter happens, the better it is for the development. It depends on the proper upbringing of a child. The parents explain to their children that lying is bad. Thus, they have to be honest with their parents. Indeed, children start lying for the same reasons as grown-ups. They also have their interests, desires, and feelings. They are often afraid to be punished or ridiculed so that they try to avoid it by inventing stories. Children can lie because of fear to upset or disappoint their parents. Similarly, when they feel danger coming from adults or other children, they need to protect themselves. Thus, they begin to lie. Without a doubt, they simply copy adults who show a bad example to young minds.
According to the scientist, untruth at an early age indicates a sharp intellect of the child. Dr.Kang Lee proves that children, who start lying earlier, have better mind-reading and self-control abilities. These qualities will help them to work and operate easier with other people. Their communicative skill is more advanced compared to children who start telling lies later. The moment the child starts making stories means he or she is developing. Parents should know that it is good news as a child becomes smarter and appears on the way of the natural development of the personality.
The fact that children start telling untruth at the age of two is a big surprise. At the age of five, almost all children know how to tell fibs. It is a common misconception that it is easier to detect a child’s lie. They are considered to be honest without life experience. After the experiment depicted in the presentation, it appeared not to be so simple. The presentation shows that children are excellent liars. It probably happens because they are great dreamers who simply use their imagination. They like fantasies, and at the same time, they can sincerely believe in them. As a result, it is hard to distinguish the truth from the lying among children.
Gradually, one would understand that it is right if children tell lies. Dr. Kang Lee affirms that the lack of mind-reading and self-control abilities can be a sign of some psychological problems, such as attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity, and autism. These health problems hinder the development of a child as a personality. Even though the disorders can appear in different ways, each of them has certain common features of the behavior. For instance, the child cannot concentrate for a long time on a single activity. It is hard for him or her to perform tasks in a specific sequence. Moreover, he or she often forgets orders.
The last important statement in the presentation explains the changes in facial blood flow while people are lying. Dr. Kang Lee has developed a new method of detecting lies. Its effectiveness is equal to 85%; the doctor called it Transdermal Optical Imaging. It shows that the blood flow increases on the nose and decreases on the cheeks when people tell untruths. A scientist named it Pinocchio-syndrome. It might be shocking to learn it because, in most of the cases, people blush when they lie, especially their cheeks and ears turn red. People tend to think that it is proof of a liar. However, the changes usually signify the emotions a person is experiencing at that moment.
Personally, I did not have much experience regarding children and lying. They were usually about four to seven years old. They were not afraid of me, but active and friendly. Those children embellished their character traits and qualities of their parents. They told me exciting stories about themselves, their pets, and people around. However, those stories resembled the dreams or programs they could see on television. Thus, they were just children’s fantasies. When they were telling the untruth, their faces were calm. Indeed, nothing from their expression or body moves could indicate lying. For them, the whole world was a game, they did not differentiate it from reality. A child would rather tell you a story he or she invented than an actual situation that happened to him or her. Children need bright emotions. Thus, when they lie, they feel fear, guilt, shame, and delight of not being caught.
The theory of lying is a very complicated science. Children are probably the best liars in the world. Dr. Kang Lee proves that there is no perfect method of detecting child’s lie. Even the Transdermal Optical Imaging method does not give a 100% result. Children are so good at lying because they partly believe in unreal stories they tell. They do not understand what is wrong. Finally, it is a parents’ task to teach children honesty, responsibility, and the importance of making the right decisions.
