Storyline

Set on a colorful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep), who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her back-up singers, Rosie Mulligan (Dame Julie Walters) and Tanya Wilkinson (Christine Baranski). Written by jojo.acapulco@gmail.com

Trivia

Dawn French was originally cast as Rosie Mulligan. After the creators described her character as "the fat, funny one", and the Musical Director was clearly not impressed with her singing, she declined the role. In her autobiography "Dear Fatty", Dawn said that she is a fan of ABBA, but she is not a fan of "Mamma Mia!" She only originally agreed to do this movie because Meryl Streep was starring. See more »

Goofs

Quotes

Sophie: God, I love Sky and I want to be with him and I... I don't want my children growing up, not knowing who their father is, because it's just, it's crap!

Crazy Credits

After the final scene of the movie Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters appear on a sound stage in matching 1970s glam-rock costumes and sing "Dancing Queen". When they finish Meryl 'asks' the audience if they want an encore. The three ladies are then joined by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard who are similarly attired. Along with Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, they provide a rendition of "Waterloo" as the main credits roll. See more »

Alternate Versions

Starting August 29, 2008, it was released in select theaters under "Mamma Mia! The Sing-Along Edition". Like Hairspray, the film was released in theaters with the lyrics at the bottom of the screen for audience participation. See more »

Take a Chance... It's Surprisingly Brilliant!

While the majority of the film is brilliantly silly, Meryl Streep gives us an emotional show stopping performance of 'The Winner Takes It All. Who wouldn't pay to see James Bond singing 'SOS'? Pierce Brosnan was humorously over-emoting everything but it worked perfectly within the context of the film.

Donna and Sophie (Mother and Daughter) are perfectly cast with an uncanny similarity in both looks and personality. Julie Walters almost steals the whole show, sorry I mean film, with her performance of 'Take a Chance on Me'.

It does take you about 20 minutes to settle down from the excitement of this outstanding cast singing their hearts out. I'm not the biggest 'movical' fan but if go in with an open mind and a bunch of people and you'll leave uplifted and pleasantly surprised.
